Who Am I?
Hi! My name is Naimah, pronounced ny-ma.
Some of the accomplishments I have made were in collaboration with others which helped me succeed. In eleventh grade for U.S. History we all had to come up with a realistic project idea that would help those in poverty, or would make a positive change. My group and I came up with the 'Uniform Drive' which was essentially getting the twelfth and ninth graders to donate uniform pieces to the lower class-men. Uniform pieces are expensive, and there may be students who are in need if multiple pieces but cannot afford them because of financial struggles. This anonymous process would allow students who needed uniform pieces feel safe in an environment where they didn't feel stigmatized as the pieces would be left in an empty classroom on the fourth floor. Although the project was unfortunately not something long term, it is still an accomplishment because it has helped some students see the support they have if they need it.
Volunteering at my local community mosque was a similar experience as I was able to give back to my community through helping assist the community office. Not only was I able to experience playing a role in office management and organization, I was also able to witness the cohesiveness and support community members had for one another. To be a part of experiences like this is eye opening to many that rely on the emotional, physical, or financial support of others.
Support within a team or community is important as it builds trust between individuals. I had yet another amazing opportunity to experience this through the Run your way to a 5k intensive. I was able to run in multiple 5ks through the support of my team and coach. I've always enjoyed the feeling of the rush of adrenaline when running, but I never had the chance to truly experience early morning runs in different sceneries. I was able to push myself physically and mentally because I knew I had a foundation of trust and support rooting for me. This was one of the best experiences I have had as it allowed me to challenge myself physically outside of playing sports.
Work brings another sense of accomplishment and gratification. My first job was with the Peer Tutoring program in TYWLS that allowed me to also mentor younger students. I felt accomplished helping them with English as I watched them grow through their work. This job allowed me to later work in my previous community's mosque. I tutored children in Arabic and helped them both read and write. As a teacher and a mentor in both scenarios, my accomplishment came from helping people succeed even when they believed they couldn't. Helping people achieve success granted me my success and the feeling of accomplishment.
Over this past summer I was able to work alongside with my sister in her business. Working with her and experiencing interactive with people in retail allowed me to broaden my future career options. I met many different people who had different life stories, but they all contributed to my work experience. As inexperienced as I was going into this, I learned a lot not only from my sister but the customers that came along with the business. Persistence and determination are important to go anywhere in life, as well as passion. These are the important skills I've learned alongside having to experience a real work setting.
